If you’re coming from Europe, however, you’ll want to bring a converter ( Cartagena is wonderfully hot year-round.

Dine on dishes like octopus with chili pepper and tucupi tiger milk, or yucca croquettes with a liquid foie gras and black truffle center, or poached prawns with black bisque and creamy cilantro rice and crab cakes with plantain and wasabi mayo.This is one of our favorite go-to restaurants in Cartagena.





Went here for drinks and appetizers and we liked it.After having our hearts fill of Latin American food on the last night we were craving a good burger and stumbled upon this. It is the capital of Magdalena Department and the fourth-largest urban city of the Caribbean Region of Colombia, after Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Soledad.

Ask them if you can sit outside and they’ll set you up with an awesome people-watching spot on the cutest cobblestone street.Yes, yes, and yes!




I had NO idea about it and Anush and I were soaked to the bone on the way back! But some years later (lo siento! And the vibe on Trinidad square at night is awesome! Like, 90 degrees plus humidity hot. But keep in mind the weather can be super hot and humid, which I didn’t mind.





So fun.

It is touristy, very easy to get around and people are friendly. When you talk about take a cab ride, you pay 50 (you are talking about dollars right?) Cartagena, set on Colombia's Caribbean coast, is becoming a must-visit, especially for Americans and Canadians enjoying new, convenient flight routes. It is such an easy destination to visit from the US – with direct flights from some major airports on the east coast or easy connections from the west coast.

The energy in the city is amazing – bustling, lively and sensual ; a totally charming experience by itself whether you walk around in the day or night.While exploring colorful alleys and buildings is fun, old town also has some incredible places to eat (more details in my “where to eat” below) as well as shop. Olé!If you’re traveling from the US, nope! There are only 7 rooms, but 4 pools, creating an intimate atmosphere like none other in the city.

Oh, and don't forget to carry your camera ;) I lost count on the number of times I’ve said “I’m going to Cartagena for sure this year.” I must have said this to myself repeatedly since 2011, only to be sidetracked by other trips.
