The wooden structure of the main keep was dismantled to allow foundation reinforcements, but all the steel elements and concrete injections were done in a way that made them perfectly hidden.
I wonder if the kids who lived in the castle were as drawn to these as modern kids are.

Japanese Castle. Spaces in the walls for firing from were called Japanese castles, like their European cousins, featured massive stone walls and large moats. It's the roughly the same route back down, though far more treacherous given you're facing open air instead of stairs.This floor, with taller ceilings and more open space, was assumed to be appointed quite nicely (sanded pillars, etc). The defenses of Himeji castle are an excellent example of this.

Ever since the first major restoration works, begun in 1934 and finalized 30 years later, it was decided that nothing will be changed in the interior and the exterior of the Himeji castle.
