The unmarked trailhead and parking area for Keyhole Falls are just a couple kilometres past the parking area for Keyhole Hot Springs. Up from the dollar store and right at the Police Station and you will come to a government liquor store and a cheaper and wider selection of booze choices than the beer and wine store. The last 1/10 mile is very rocky but still a hike, not a "climb." Enormous tree trunks lay, twisted in the river and ghostly white and long dead trees still stand at the edges of the valley. The flat-topped monarch is seen from almost anywhere in the park.
Recreation Sites and Trails BC have closed Keyhole Hot Springs with the reason being: "Keyhole Falls Trail will be closed from April 1st to November 15th yearly. It is easy to find if you have a good idea where it is, see the map below. The crumbing cliffs reveal an astounding array of recent volcanic activity and you find yourself staring in amazement at the extraordinarily beautiful rocks.The trail then continues through deep forest and along a frighteningly chaotic boulder field with house sized boulders filling a chasm between cliffs. Keyhole Hot Springs are pretty amazing.Getting down to Upper Lillooet River from the Keyhole Hot Springs campsite is easy. A couple of sections are very steep, and it is easy to stray from the trail. The shape of the valley and possibly the way the two valleys join not far from this area for some reason cause it to be like a wind tunnel most days. For the first few kilometres you don't see much through the forest, but soon the the trees open up and you catch your first great views of the Lillooet River. Natural resource officers and conservation officers are enforcing both these closures, and will issue violation tickets to anyone caught ignoring the restrictions. Just continue driving past the Lillooet River Trail. A short trail, maybe 5 or 10 minutes, on river left (north) leads to the escarpment and to a viewpoint above the brink of Keyhole Falls. The views alone are worth the drive and hike down! Different angles show the great mountain's unique profiles. The Keyhole Route to the summit of majestic Longs Peak is not a hike, however, it is an extrordinary experience for those who come prepared. Continuing along the path through the huge boulders you come to the two fantastic, cemented in pools on the cliff-side dipping into the river. This is your last chance for food, drinks and gas before leaving civilization.
Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Keyhole Falls Hot Springs and trail are closed April 1st to November 15th each year to support Grizzly Bear population recovery efforts in the area.
Across from Keyhole Hot Springs and campsite there is a abrupt and massive opposing rock face created from the eruption of Plinth Peak on Mount Meager in 410BCE. Along the trail there are at least two fantastic and inviting areas along the trail (beside the river) perfect for camping.
Keyhole via Wild Loop Trail is a 2.4 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Loveland, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. This right turn takes you to the start of the Upper Lillooet Forest Service Road. The trail to Whistler Train Wreck is an easy, yet varied route through deep forest, across a great suspension bridge over Mount Meager, the jagged, hostile looking, though beautiful snow covered peak. If you ever parked at the old trailhead, this is the river you drove through just before parking. Disregard for the mountain environment any time of year has meant danger, injury and even death.The Keyhole Route can experience winter-like conditions at any time, requiring greater skill and judgment. It is possible to get close to the falls by hiking up the canyon from the Keyhole Hot Springs trail, however as of summer 2018 the trail had been closed indefinitely due to frequent visits by habituated grizzly bears. The road is very straight, paved, wide and very long. Mileage is listed at 1 mile from the TH to the Keyhole Sink.
Pass through the gate and follow the blue blazes marked on the trees in regular intervals. Nice trail; begins easy, becomes moderate, and finishes with a challenge, especially if you climb to the top of the falls. Hiking in Whistler in October is often unexpectedly stunning. It is a bit daunting, however, access to the area is still allowed.
