I want to start this review off by saying that a lot of people won't (and thankfully) haven't been in an abusive relationship so they will struggle to understand this story, but those that have will absolutely "get this" book and what this author has been through. The title character is Edmond O'Brien, a lonely travelling salesman who ends up married to two women, Eve (Joan Fontaine)--and Phyllis ().Eventually, of course, the truth comes out. Producer/Screenwriter Collier Young was married to Fontaine at the time and had previously been married to Lupino. July 20, 2018 An excellent job of acting by all, but the star of this picture is Ida Lupino who plays the second wife and so deftly directed this little film. Lupino's treatment of an adulterous husband is so even-handed, so sympathetic, you don't just feel for him; you understand him.

Harry tells Jordan the whole story of meeting Eve (Lupino) in Los Angeles, drifting into an affair with her, learning she was pregnant and being unable to abandon her. The film bravely explores some pretty volatile topics that range well beyond the bigamy issue. In view of the social attitudes that prevailed in the early 1950s, the subject matter covered in this movie must have seemed both controversial and challenging to many audiences, particularly due to the understanding attitude it takes to a set of circumstances that lead to bigamy and the depiction of the bigamist as a sympathetic character. It is not unique among production code dramas in that it displays some very old fashioned ideas, primarily that a woman will go somewhat bonkers if she finds out she cannot have children, and a symptom of a married woman gone bonkers is for her to take a deep interest in big business.
It is at this point in the film when it gets very interesting. As films go, The Bigamist is no Casablanca, but it's certainly not sub par, and it's well worth the time invested. Classics, Instead, it tries to portray O'Brien in a pretty sympathetic light--while not excusing his actions. THE BIGAMIST by Mary Turner Thomson is a fascinating first-hand account of a young, single mother who is courted by and married to what can only be labeled as a catfishing sociopath.
