Upon reading Hannah Pittard's newest novel, I can't help but wonder if it's sometimes more than that. My toes hit the scalding hot golden sand. He describes his father directly with a comment on his smell.It is called ‘’ direct characterization’’ The father is a flat character - he remains the same throughout the story. It was one of the most difficult moments in my life growing up.The story is always told about the kid who moves away, but never about the one who is left behind.

Cheever conveys Charlie’s mindset by having him say ‘Daddy’ in the last few lines, rather than the ‘Father’ that he uses to address him throughout the story, showing that he is desperately trying to hold onto his hopeless relationship with his father.
