Finance Minister Tom Osborne says he'll present a provincial budget before the end of September.The province hasn't presented a budget yet, which normally happens sometime in April, because the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into the province's financial planning, severely slashing oil and tax revenues coming into the province.
He says he knows it's a tough job, but he's ready to tackle it. Newfoundland and Labrador is currently projecting a $2.1 billion deficit for the 2020-21 fiscal year, an increase of $1.35 billion from the April 2019 budget. He says the province came in to 2020 in “relatively good shape” despite facing several challenges, but has been put in a precarious position because of the current situation.
